Financial Holdings Ltd (“FHL”) is a 100% New Zealand owned and operated finance company that has been providing finance to New Zealanders in one form or another for over 38 years.

FHL provides finance for plant & equipment, vehicle, marine, consumer credit, and debt consolidation.

We have over many years developed considerable experience and expertise having financed goods into the following sectors; Retail, Commercial, Manufacturing, Engineering, Import Export, Marine, Property, Bio-technology, Technology, Security, Insurance and Consumer Credit fields.

FHL is a unique organisation committed to excellence in a commercial world where mediocrity is the norm. Our vision is to help small to medium sized companies (SME’S) generate additional revenue through finance and other add-ons.

FHL has centralised processing and administration facilities based in our Auckland Head Office. We also have developed relationships with Brokers and Dealers up and down the length of New Zealand.

A Brief History

In 1972 Mervyn Oldham the founding principal began a finance company with a number of other colleagues which they ran in their spare time. At the time Mervyn was working for one of the largest finance houses in the county and learning his trade. From modest beginnings the business began to steadily grow. This was whilst Mervyn's professional career was taking off, as he moved through the ranks of Broadlands Dominion Group, he eventually settled in to the finance division. 

Fletcher Challenge then launched a successful takeover of Broadlands Dominion Group and with the inevitable restructuring many senior executives left. National Australia Bank ultimately took over the operations of Broadlands Group.

In the early 1980's Mervyn and a number of colleagues decided to "go it alone" and set off to run their own finance company full-time.

Initially they only financed small consumer loans, receiving the majority of applications through "introducers" of business. The business grew rapidly. With this growth they decided to diversify into other areas of finance including property, taking on a number of large property deals.

In 1987 world sharemarkets took a pounding. New Zealand fared no better and business suffered. One of the largest property deals almost tipped the company over. Through shear determination the business persevered. A very important lesson was learnt however and that was to stick to what they knew best – small consumer loans, and to be well capitalised.

Out of the ashes...

FHL developed from this aftermath of this period and has grown steadily since.

Management realised that they needed to develop a business that differentiated itself from the multitude of other competitors out there that were all offering similar products and services.

What became obvious was that very few businesses were sophisticated enough to actually manage risk in an effective way. FHL identified this and today uses sophisticated technology to measure credit risk and reduce it to acceptable levels without compromising service performance.

The vast majority of the current Dealers and Brokers have been with the company for well in excess of 10 years. This longevity is no mean feat when considering the fallout and aftermath of the ’87 sharemarket crash, more recent finance company collapse, and impending global credit crunch.

Using this comprehensive approach to managing risk, FHL has continued to be a highly successful business. In addition to assisting businesses grow revenue, FHL also assists in establishing other forms of revenue through finance add-ons, and marketing, including promotions and the ability to resell through effective refinancing programs.

FHL's mission is very simple. We want to become ‘world-class’ here in New Zealand. Providing the very best service possible with a model that is both profitable, and sustainable. This means that we must provide holistic solutions to managing risk, and provide the very best service possible.

At FHL we do not want to be known as average, or just simply meeting the industry standard. We want to be known as an organisation that is constantly striving to achieve the highest standards of excellence. In order to achieve this it is vital for us to consistently improve. Continual ongoing improvement is one of our core values and is part of the very make-up of our culture.

Each year we aim to reduce our carbon footprint from the previous year. At FHL we make use of extensive technology, including optical scanners, to take electronic copies of all of our records. This has reduced the volume of paper generated and stored on our premises massively. There are also benefits of having a centralised Head Office that equally contribute to a lowing of costs, and reduction in waste. These factors alone make FHL a far more green business than it was even 5 years ago.
